Start above the paw
Touch the shoulder or upper leg briefly before progressing down toward the paw over multiple sessions.
Support without gripping
Rest a hand lightly, reward comfort, and release before the dog pulls away. Later, lift the paw only a fraction.
Add tools separately
Introduce towels, clippers, or grinders as separate steps rather than combining every challenge at once.
What to avoid
Keep the response gentle.
Avoid chasing and recapturing a paw after the dog withdraws it.
Safety boundary
When to get more help.
Limping, swollen paws, broken nails, or sudden sensitivity requires veterinary assessment.
