Handling Sensitivity series

Why Some Dogs Dislike Being Held

Being lifted removes control and changes balance. Discomfort does not mean a dog is stubborn or unaffectionate.

Why Some Dogs Dislike Being Held

Restraint feels different from touch

A dog may enjoy stroking but dislike arms around the body, feet leaving the floor, or pressure around the chest and abdomen.

History and familiarity matter

Dogs who were not gently introduced to handling, who have experienced rough restraint, or who are new to the home may need a slower progression.

Pain must be considered

Sensitivity around one body area, a sudden change, yelping, reluctance to jump, or stiffness can point to discomfort rather than a training problem.

Why Some Dogs Dislike Being Held

What to avoid

Keep the response gentle.

Avoid repeatedly lifting the dog to prove that nothing bad will happen.

Safety boundary

When to get more help.

A dog who freezes, growls, snaps, or has bitten during lifting should not be handled by children.
