First, make the interaction boring
Stop moving the hand, sleeve, or foot that the puppy is chasing. Avoid squealing or fast pulling if those reactions increase excitement.
Create a short pause
Step behind a gate or out of reach for about 15–30 seconds. The goal is not social isolation as punishment. It is a brief, predictable end to the current interaction.
Return with a better option
Offer a suitable toy or chew and keep the next interaction lower in energy. Notice and reinforce the moment the puppy chooses the correct object.
What to avoid
Keep the response gentle.
Avoid yelling, alpha rolls, nose taps, leash corrections, and physically forcing the mouth open.
Safety boundary
When to get more help.
If the puppy cannot disengage, bites cause injury, or the behavior is worsening, obtain individualized professional support.
