Puppy Biting series

Biting During Handling

A puppy who mouths during touch may be playful, uncomfortable, frightened, or in pain.

Biting During Handling

Notice the exact moment

Does biting begin when hands approach, when one body area is touched, when the puppy is lifted, or only after several seconds of restraint? The sequence changes the interpretation.

Look for quieter signals first

Turning away, lip licking, leaning back, paw lifting, freezing, or trying to leave often appears before teeth.

Return choice to the interaction

Use one brief touch, remove the hand, and pause. Reinforce staying comfortable rather than continuing until the puppy struggles.
