Early “Please Stop” Signals

Dogs often communicate discomfort before they growl. Small signals are worth respecting.

Early “Please Stop” Signals

Movement away is communication

Turning the head, leaning away, stepping back, lowering the body, or leaving the area can all be requests for more space.

Faces can become quieter

Lip licking, yawning, a closed tense mouth, showing the whites of the eyes, or suddenly stopping movement may appear during uncomfortable handling.

Escalation follows ignored signals

If early signals do not change what happens, a dog may freeze, growl, snap, or bite. Respecting the earlier signal can prevent rehearsal of the later one.

What to avoid

Keep the response gentle.

Do not punish leaving, growling, or other communication about discomfort.

Safety boundary

When to get more help.
