Arousal can keep climbing
Visitors, play, training, noise, handling, walks, and novelty all add stimulation. A dog may enjoy each event but still struggle with the total load.
Watch for frantic behavior
Pacing, repeated zooming, grabbing clothes, barking at small sounds, inability to lie down, panting without heat, and rapidly switching activities can indicate that regulation is becoming harder.
Recovery needs less input
Move to a familiar quieter area, reduce talking and touching, provide water and a toilet opportunity, and protect rest. Some dogs settle better when people stop trying to help actively.
What to avoid
Keep the response gentle.
Avoid adding intense fetch or rough play to “burn off” every burst of arousal.
Safety boundary
When to get more help.
Persistent panting, agitation, pain signals, or sudden inability to settle may require veterinary assessment.
