Stress & Adjustment series

The First Night Home

The first night is a major transition, not a test of independence.

The First Night Home

Familiarity has disappeared

New smells, sounds, people, and sleeping arrangements can make rest difficult even for a normally confident dog.

Keep the night simple

Use a nearby predictable sleeping area, a calm toilet routine, low light, and minimal play. Respond to needs without turning waking into a party.

Expect gradual change

Some dogs settle quickly; others need several nights. Look for shorter waking periods and easier return to rest.

The First Night Home

What to avoid

Keep the response gentle.

Avoid leaving a panicking puppy to escalate for long periods in the name of training.

Safety boundary

When to get more help.

Repeated vomiting, diarrhea, breathing difficulty, pain, or severe unrelenting distress requires veterinary advice.
