Why Sniffing Matters

Sniffing is not a delay to a walk. For a dog, it is a primary way of understanding and engaging with the world.

Why Sniffing Matters

Sniffing is information gathering

A dog's sense of smell provides enormous detail about the environment, other animals, and recent activity. Walking without sniffing is a bit like reading a book with most of the pages skipped.

It can also be calming

For many dogs, unhurried sniffing supports a calmer emotional state, similar to how a slower pace can help a person feel more settled.

It supports confidence in new places

Allowing time to sniff a new environment before expecting engagement or calm behavior gives a dog a chance to orient before being asked to perform.

Why Sniffing Matters

What to avoid

Keep the response gentle.

Avoid treating every walk purely as exercise with no room for exploration. A walk that is all pace and no sniffing meets fewer of your dog's needs.

Safety boundary

When to get more help.

If sudden reluctance to sniff or explore appears alongside other changes, a veterinary check can rule out pain or illness as a cause.
